Indian Medical Association Moradabad cooks up academic delight

Ethics, integrity & innovation was the conference theme

Burstabdomen editor at large attended the annual conference of Indian Medical Association , Moradabad.

The highlight of the meeting were lectures by doctors of repute, who were invited from across Delhi NCR region.

It was a day long event, where the audience remained glued to their seats as they picked up pearls of wisdom on diverse subjects.

This is one of the two halls- both of which remained fully occupied throughout

Dr Suboohi Rizvi made a topic as complicated as fetal medicine seem easy and doable through her discourse. Fetal medicine is an emerging discipline in India. Diagnosis and treatment of babies still in their mother’s womb is made possible using technology and clinical skills.

A sensitive issue explained with empathy

Renowned blood specialist -(hematologist) Dr Amita Mahajan spared no effort in explaining her rationale on management of anaemia in the Indian context.

What is anaemia?

Anaemia ( lack of blood / hemoglobin- in layman’s term) is one of the commonest disease in India.

What commonly causes anaemia?

Most common cause of anaemia in India is nutritional ( lack of adequate food intake) – iron deficiency and vitamin B 12 deficiency.

Without mincing words

Dr Mahajan spared no effort in breaking down myths and dogmas of iron therapy. She has served as a member of many national committees on the topic. Her suggestions have been included in national guidelines.

When to take iron tablets?

She clearly mentioned that iron capsules taken after meals are often better tolerated by children and pregnant ladies. This occurs without any reduction in its effectiveness.

Once a day capsules are better tolerated

This generated a heated discussion with some doctors begging to differ.

Dr Mahajan highlighted the way in which ‘Big Pharma’ modulates popular perceptions and propagates dogma.

What does not work in iron tablets?

Iron and Vitamin b complex and zinc except folic acid and B12 are not to be combined as per Drug Technical Advisory Board of India

Some companies promote enteric coated iron tablets – which are a sham. Dr Mahajan dispelled many such myths that circulate within the doctor community.

Dal Muradabadi is a simple and comforting local delicacy. Recipe here

Moradabad the ‘brass city of India‘ was named after the son of Shah Jahan. It has been around for almost 400 years. The city grapples with a poor literacy rate (60%) as per the 2011 Indian census. As with other Indian cities- there is a visible gap between the old city and the newly built areas.

On the Moradabad highway-

Dr Sandeep Dewan (not the person above), an authority figure in ICU care in India, graced the occasion. He shared his strategy for providing quality ICU care in resource-stretched areas. He has helped standardize ICU care across hospitals. He has done this through telemedicine. This serves the specialized healthcare deprived tier 2 and tier 3 cities across India.

Participants gained enrichment from the discussion. They also enjoyed the food and hospitality. They returned with new knowledge, ideas, new friends, and goodies.
